Cleveland Artists Foundation
Cleveland's Center for Regional Art
"Accompanied by catalogs with fresh observations by scholars and researchers, the foundation's exhibitions are building awareness of the region's greatest achievements in the visual arts in the 20th century. That's an essential service-and at the moment, no other institution in the city is doing it as consistently, or as well." --Steven Litt, Plain Dealer Art Critic
Cleveland Artists Foundation will be closed on Friday, January 1. Happy New Year!

History and Mission

The Cleveland Artists Foundation (CAF) was founded in 1984 by Cleveland-based artists, patrons, and collectors who recognized the need to establish an organization that would preserve, research, collect, and exhibit the most significant visual art of the Northeast Ohio region. CAF has become the premier center for the art of Northeast Ohio—owing both to its significant collecting initiative, and to its commitment to creative exhibition planning and educational outreach. Central to CAF’s commitment to embracing the range of artistic excellence in this region is its priority of conceiving stimulating exhibitions, educational programming, and scholarly publications.

Initially, CAF's mission of preserving, exhibiting, actively collecting, and researching the artistic heritage of Northeast Ohio focused primarily on a group of artists known as the "Cleveland School" who were active from 1900-1950. Over the past several years, CAF has broadened its historical scope to integrate the contributions of artists who were active before and since the "Cleveland School." In particular, CAF now devotes attention to the achievements of the most significant artists in Northeast Ohio whose period of productivity has encompassed all or part of the past 50 years. By broadening its earlier scope in this manner, CAF has created a forum that encourages a more comprehensive discussion of artistic traditions and innovations in Cleveland, both as they define the region and as they relate to current national and international artistic concerns.

The organization is supported through cash and in-kind contributions of many individuals, foundations, corporations, and through state funding, memberships, and fundraisers.
